Dan Caruso is the chairman and CEO of Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO), the global leader in communications infrastructure services. As a founder of the business in 2007, he has led Zayo from startup to IPO to a company with a multi-billion dollar equity value. Zayo provides mission-critical bandwidth to the world’s most impactful companies, fueling the innovations that are transforming society.
Dan has been part of three fiber startups that have become decacorns, which means they eclipsed valuations of $10B. The first, which Dan joined as it began to scale, was MFS Communications. MFS was a pioneer in competing with the Bell system during the initial commercialization of the Internet. The second, which Dan joined as a founding executive, was Level 3 Communications. Dan served in a variety of strategic and operational leadership roles during his tenure at Level 3, including oversight of engineering, construction, operations and marketing. The third is Zayo.
Prior to launching Zayo, Dan was the President and CEO of ICG Communications, where he led the take-private buyout in 2004. In 2006, ICG was sold, which yielded a return of approximately 25X the $8.7M investment. He began his career at Illinois Bell/Ameritech. Dan holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois.
Dan is an investor in several Colorado high impact Colorado companies and is an active supporter of entrepreneurship, education and diversity at the University of Colorado, University of Denver and the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago and in the Boulder/Denver community.
