Startup Stories: Dave Wright & Jay Prassl
Limited Capacity seats available

One of the biggest pains for any web host or anyone who is trying to provide a service via servers is storage. Typically storage I/O is the most common bottleneck and can easily bring a perfectly performing network to its knees in a matter of moments.

SolidFire began in January 2010 after founder and CEO Dave Wright (@jungledave) started a company called Jungle Disk in 2007. Wright went on to sell that backup solution to Rackspace in 2008. After working closely with the Rackspace Cloud division to build a large-scale cloud platform supporting tens of thousands of users, Wright left Rackspace to start SolidFire.

Being placed in charge of figuring out all of the storage needs of a large web host, Wright developed a checklist for what was needed to solve all the storage solution challenges across multiple platforms. The problem Wright faced was he literally sought out every hardware vendor across the world, and he couldn’t find one solution that could solve all of the problems.

SolidFire was originally designed to solve the many storage problems in a multi-tenant environment, such as cloud and managed hosting, where storage resources are shared.

An Intro to Mindfulness for Startups
Limited Capacity filling up

### UPDATE - EVENT MOVED TO NAROPA UNIVERSITY TO ACCOMODATE HIGH PARTICIPATION DEMAND! EVENT NOW STARTS @ 1:30pm and is still on 5/11 ###

"Mindfulness" has become a buzzword in the popular culture and is now regularly featured in places ranging from the Harvard Business Review to the local coffee house. Most of the time, it’s brought up in the context of stress management and relaxation. As anyone in the startup world knows stress is constant.  But that’s only half the picture…

The other half of the picture is augmenting performance - how can mindfulness tools be employed by entreprenuers to gain and maintain an edge for themselves and their start-up? Brought to you by Mark Williams, a former F-15 pilot, Gulf War combat vet and long-time practitioner of meditation, martial arts and entrepreneurship, this presentation shows how top performers can optimize across the board through the practice of mindfulness.

Mark focuses on and directly trains three key competitive talents: the ability to proactively manage stress and anxiety; the ability to maintain focus, concentration and awareness under duress; and the ability to function smoothly as leader or member of a team. This presentation introduces the “OODA Loop” – the high performance paradigm of fighter jet flying – and combines it with the science of mindfulness, hands-on experiential exercises, and stories of high performerresults to show how mindfulness impacts performance and well-being.

Infrastructure & Architecture Design
Limited Capacity seats available

Designing an architecture for your infrastructure is one of the most important decisions you'll make when building a new application. Learn tips and get advice about how to design your infrastructure and how to interface with different API services.

"How hosting design influences software design and vice versa" by Spike Ilacqua
Infrastructure and architecture design is one of the most important decisions to be made when building any website or app, yet it is often quickly overlooked by startups. In this talk, the founder of Indra's Net (a Boulder hosting company) gives examples of good and bad architecture decisions, along with sage advice about choosing your infrastructure. If you think the best option for your next website or app is to just put it up on Heroku and forget about it, you need to listen to this talk.

"How I built a side-project for pennies and got featured on Product Hunt without going down" by Matt Null
Recently Matt built gifyourface.com in a couple of hours, paid a few pennies for hosting, and got featured on ProductHunt. His little side project was upvoted 100+ times and had traffic from all over the world. Even with all of that traffic, Matt's little project never went down, took a couple of hours to set up, and cost him pennies. In this talk, Matt will share with you the architecture behind GifYourFace.com that allowed for the cheap uptime, his thought process behind those decisions, and advice for your own projects.

Looney's experiences enduring the hardest and longest mountain bike races across the globe have accomplished more than an impressive list of accolades.  She has sought out races that had never been done and in countries that most people wouldn't travel to alone. It was in those experiences that the value of pushing past the limits of the comfort zone became clear. "Trying new things completely shifts your frame of reference and dramatically improves self-confidence. You develop a wider capacity to experience life and will achieve more ambitious goals. We die a slow death of complacency by doing things the same way and not ever feeling that slight anxiety when trying something new." Sonya brings her experience as a mountain bike pioneer to life and shares how you unlock your true potential and break down barriers.

HumorHackfest
Limited Capacity filling up

Would your life be better if you were funnier?

The Humor Research Lab (HuRL) at the University of Colorado Boulder is collaborating with Boulder Startup Week attendees to make the world a more humorous place.

Aside from taking an improv or a stand-up comedy class, people have few options if they want to become funnier. Our proposal is simple: bring together entrepreneurs, programmers, scientists and comedians to create products—tech or otherwise—that help people learn and practice how to be funnier, thus enriching their lives and the lives of people around them.

Sponsored by the Deming Center at the Leeds School of Business, the Humor Hackathon will take place at Quick Left on Tuesday from 6-10 pm. Join us for beer, food, hacking, and a lot of laughs. Don't code? Don't worry. There will be plenty of ways that you can improve your funny bone. You can read more about Peter's quest to find what makes people funny in FiveThirtyEight

Judges include scientists, comedians, startup and tech aficionados: Tara Calihman, Dr. Peter McGraw, and Norm Laviolette, Co-owner of the Improv Asylum and Laugh Boston.

more to be announced!

Sponsors include Cards Against Humanity, Winking Girl Salsa and the Deming Center. Imagine the prizes!

Building for the New Web
Limited Capacity seats available

The new web aka web 2.0 is defined by thick JS clients, static web content, and loads of API integrations. Learn from experienced industry veterans on how to build an application in today's landscape.

"The Design Implications of the Realtime Web" by Aaron Gray
As the demand for a realtime web is met with our ability to build it, browsers now facilitate more and more of our application's code. To accommodate, JavaScript MVCs polluted the web with new frameworks that meet the needs of users and designers with varying degrees of success. Through natural selection, a handful have lasted and made the ambitions of the realtime web more attainable than ever. We'll discuss the design implications of realtime applications that run in the browser, what you can do to inspire the use of new technologies, and how SpaceBars, MiniMongo, Socket.io, and DDP help your team implement better apps in less time through Meteor.

"Guerilla APIs" by Shelby Switzer
Open data at the local scale is even more of a mess than at the national level, but while there are increasing efforts to improve things nationally, cities, towns, counties, and even states are being left behind. These smaller entities don't have the resources to implement APIs for their data, and community tech groups and developers who want to use this data constantly hit walls — from fragmented, non-uniform data to finding API hosting and maintenance. But what if we could throw all that data in a box that’s easy to open, close, and move around — bypassing traditional solutions requiring infrastructure for hosting and maintenance. Enter Docker and ElasticSearch, and a simple three-layer API-in-a-box solution that any developer can immediately turn on with `docker-compose up`.

"Static is the New Black" by Ara Howard
Static websites and content is coming back as a web development trend in a huge way. In a follow up talk to his wildly popular post "Static is the New Black", Ara discusses why companies small and large are going static. His talk will include some code, so come with your nerd hat on.

UX Lessons for Startups (Design Lightning Talks)
Limited Capacity full

Join us to hear three veteran startup design and UX leaders share the lessons they've learned.

Andy Montgomery / All Design Jobs are (Not) Created Equal: Designing for digital agencies and startups (or small product companies) can be very different. This talk will look at the pros and cons of both environments and make some recommendations for those starting out their career or those considering a change.

Dave Stadler / Small Team, Big UX: In a startup everyone has to wear multiple hats to get things done. This is how to work smarter with less resources.

Jeff Zabel / The Dark-Horse prototype: As a startup, creating a superior design can be achieved through testing iterative prototypes.  What might not be clear is that prototyping doesn’t always equal iteration; specifically, a prototype doesn’t always mean testing a possible final solution.  Sometimes it means creating a long-shot design that’s only purpose is to inform a later design or that is a far-out concept that has potential to turn out big.

Limited Capacity seats available

Hosted by Congo.io and Modus Law, the Startup Law 101 session will outline topics that every serious entrepreneur should know.

There will be a Q&A session following the talk.

Topic covered may include: How to incorporate, Splitting Equity Among Founders, Fundamentals of Vesting, Patents, Fundraising, and more.

Building Amazing Mobile Applications

Want to build an awesome mobile application? Learn some great advice and get your questions answered by developers responsible for millions of app store downloads.

“Best Practices for Building Ethereal Apps” by Jordan Stone, Chief Software Architect at Notion
Jordan is an experienced software architect, building apps with millions of downloads for special events, including the Masters, Wimbledon, and the US Open. In this talk, Jordan shares lessons regarding data persistence, configuration, and performance when building apps that are only relevant for a short amount of time. What would you do if you didn't have time to recognize and fix a bug in production?

“The hard thing about mobile things” by Vikas Reddy, Co-Founder at Occipital
Vikas Reddy is co-founder of Occipital, startup focused on mobile computer vision. With co-founder Jeff Powers, Vikas led the development of RedLaser, a popular barcode-scanning application launched in 2009 that was acquired by eBay in June 2010. Vikas and the team at Occipital are focused on their new product, the Structure Sensor, a device made for the iPad that can capture the world in 3D. In this talk, Vikas will share some practical lessons for running a mobile first startup, learned the hard way at Occipital.

"Hybrid Mobile Apps Done Right" by Miles Matthias, CTO of EquityEats
For obvious reasons, hybrid mobile apps are an attractive option to building mobile apps nowadays. In this talk, Miles explains how to build hybrid mobile apps for the long term. If you've ever built an app over a weekend with a framework like Phonegap, Ionic, or Titanium, had it take off, and felt that those aren't good frameworks for long term maintenance and development, you're completely right. Miles will show you how to graduate from those "silver bullet" frameworks.

Designing for Magic Paper: Mystical Scrolls and Interactive Screens

Type designer Erik Spiekermann has said that designing for the screen is just designing for bad paper. We’d argue it’s more like magic paper, but the point is that good designers have always embraced the limitations caused by tricky substrates—oftentimes even leading to innovation. Our respect for the classic principles of print design has merged with our love for the endless possibilities of technology to form the foundations of our approach to interactive design and development.

Key Startup Challenges Solved by Leveraging the Cloud

Over the past decade we have seen technology evolution accelerate at an unprecedented pace. New platforms, new solutions—even entirely new business models—are emerging so fast that it’s no wonder it’s so difficult for today’s start up businesses to keep up. And at the center of it all? The cloud….a term so overused and over-hyped that you can ask 10 different people what it is and get 10 different answers.

We'll unpack the core challenges that plague today’s new businesses and present real-world, actionable examples of businesses like yours that  have leveraged Cloud IaaS to:

·         Overcome the limitations of a small IT staff—in terms of numbers and technology savvy

·         Reduce the cost and logistics associated with hardware acquisition

·         Improve IT Governance & Control

·         Deliver unprecedented flexibility & scale

·         Make affordable business continuity a reality

How to Raise Money on AngelList through Syndicates

Raising money through AngelList Syndicates is awesome, but the inner workings can be a bit of black box. Once you get someone to "lead" your Syndicate, there are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes. Foundry Group's FG Angels Syndicate invested in Ramen in November 2014. In this session, Ramen's CEO will talk about what happens before the Syndicate "goes live", what you can expect up until the day the money hits the bank, and some interesting gotchas along the way.
